NSCG Academy of Sport

ONE TEAM, ONE DREAM

Indulge your sporty side in lots of ways when you study with us. If you enjoy sport you can join one of our sports academies alongside your studies. Our Newcastle College campus offers six performance academies, they’re nationally recognised and give you the opportunity to compete all over the UK, these include:

  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Football (girls & boys)
  • Netball
  • Rugby
  • Volleyball

And, If you’re already competing at county level or above in your chosen sport then you could be part of our Elite Sports Performance Programme. So, whatever your level, you can enjoy our knock-out facilities and see why we’ve earned our reputation as the Midlands’ top sports college.

Students will receive at least five hours of professional coaching each week, with matches played either at college sites or away on Wednesday afternoons. Academy teams will also play in competitive regional and national competitions.

Entry requirements for any Sports Academies are as follows:

  • Suitable sport reference (from a club/coach)
  • A good level of playing experience
  • A student at NSCG on a full-time course

And that's not all, there's loads more stuff to get involved in including sports trips, visits to leading sports universities and a brilliant social life when you become a member of TEAM:NSCG.

Elite Sports Performance Programme

Whatever your chosen sport, our Elite Sports Performance Programme (ESPP) was created to allow super talented athletes to continue studying whilst training and competing to the highest level.

As you might of guessed by the title, you’ve got to be the best of the best to be selected. You can be competing in any sport, but need to showcase that you are performing at a high county, national or international level.

The Benefits: There is a rigorous application process you have to complete. But, if you’re accepted on to the programme, you’ll be loving life with the following benefits:

  • Sports Scholarship Funding: You can apply for scholarship funding that will give you financial help towards training costs, transport and essential equipment
  • Free use of sports facilities and gym
  • Free fitness programme
  • Free ESPP kit
  • University workshops at top sports institutions
  • Dedicated Sport Science Support Officer
  • Physiotherapy, sports massage and rehabilitation services

Teachers use innovative resources that help to make theory more memorable for learners. Sports teachers use up-to-date location technology to produce a detailed post-match analysis for learners to scrutinise, so that they develop their tactical skills in football more rapidly.

Andy Griffin Football Academy U18 Colleges' Cup Winners 2019

Our Andy Griffin Football Academy Men's Academy were crowned winners of the English Schools Football Associations U18 Colleges' Cup winning 3-0 at Stoke City Stadium.

Jenny Hesketh

NSCG A Level student Jenny balances her commitments to the AGFA Ladies team as well as being a member of the English Colleges Football Association (ECFA) national squad. Jenny was recently named AoC Sport's 'Student Performer of the Year'.

In 2019, our Ladies' Volleyball team won both regional and national volleyball titles as well as being named AoC Sport 'Team of the Year'.

Named after local World Cup winning legend and Stoke City Goalkeeper, Gordon Banks OBE our sports centre facilities are the hub for all college sporting activities.

Abbygael Harris is a former NSCG student who plays badminton at the highest level. Ranked GB Women's U19 No.1 she is currently working towards qualifying for Tokyo 2021.

Beth Roberts, England Ladies Footballer

England U19 International Beth Roberts, is a current NSCG HNC Sport student and member of the Andy Griffin Football Academy (AGFA).

Securing her place at University of Oxford to study Theology & Religion – Maddison Gater well and truly smashed her A Level results with A*, A*, A, A grades in Philosophy, Ethics & Religion, her EPQ, History and French.

Triple Jumper Ben Williams studied A Levels at NSCG and has gone on to compete on an international stage. He is currently prepping for the Tokyo Olympics.

Pole Vaulter Steven Lewis studied A Levels at NSCG, now retired, he is Britain’s most successful Pole Vault Olympian, representing Team GB in Beijing & London Olympic games.
